Learn a simple folding method to reduce beach towel bulk and save space in your closet, gym bag, or suitcase. Perfect for cotton-poly blend towels.

Quick answer

Fold your beach towel lengthwise into thirds, then roll tightly from one end. This method reduces bulk, prevents creases, and fits neatly into small spaces.

Why this method works for cotton-poly blend towels

Most beach towels, including the Asana Hawaii Mandala and Kohala Palms designs, are made from a 52% cotton, 48% polyester blend. This fabric holds creases less than pure cotton, so rolling instead of folding keeps the towel looking fresh.

The terry fabric on the non-printed side adds water absorbency but also bulk. A tight roll compresses the terry loops, reducing the overall volume by up to half compared to a standard flat fold.

Step-by-step folding method

  1. Lay the towel flat, printed side down: Spread the towel on a clean, flat surface with the printed side facing down. Smooth out any wrinkles with your hands. Working on a hard floor or table gives you a smoother roll than doing it on a bed.
  2. Fold lengthwise into thirds: Bring one long edge to the center, then fold the opposite edge over the top. You should have a long, narrow rectangle about 10 inches wide. If the towel is extra wide (like a 30x60), you can fold it into quarters instead—just make sure the width is even so the roll stays uniform.
  3. Roll tightly from one short end: Start at either short end and roll the towel toward the opposite end, keeping tension even. Tuck in any loose corners as you go. A loose roll takes up more space and may unravel. Apply steady pressure—not so tight that you stretch the fabric.
  4. Secure with a band or strap (optional): Wrap a hair tie, elastic band, or luggage strap around the rolled towel to keep it compact during travel or storage. Avoid rubber bands that might leave marks on the printed side. Use a fabric-friendly band or a dedicated towel strap.
